About This Place

Nestled in the vibrant heart of Denver’s Larimer Square, Tamayo offers an elevated take on American cuisine infused with bold Mexican flavors, masterfully crafted by renowned Chef Richard Sandoval. From the moment you enter, the restaurant’s stunning interior exudes a sophisticated yet inviting ambiance, perfect for an intimate dinner or a memorable date night. The polished décor, coupled with a bright rooftop deck, creates a refreshing, modern space that makes every visit feel special.

The menu is a delightful journey through vibrant tastes and textures, with a focus on authentic ingredients and innovative presentations. Standout dishes like the Queso Fundido—a luscious melted cheese experience enriched with spicy chili morita sauce and paired with warm flour tortillas—instantly ignite your palate. Fans rave about the homemade tortillas that cradle the Shrimp & Crab Enchiladas, drenched in the irresistibly creamy guajillo sauce, a dish that is truly unforgettable for its rich, smoky notes balanced by delicate seafood flavors.

One cannot miss the Taco Tuesday specialties, featuring favorites such as the Carnitas Tacos Al Pastor and the succulent Carne Asada Tacos, each bursting with authentic marination and fresh garnishes. The Quesabirria, with tender beef barbacoa, melted cheese, and a tangy avocado purée complements the smoky richness and elevates the traditional taco to a gourmet delight. For a lighter yet equally satisfying option, the Red Snapper Ceviche offers a refreshing bite with zesty lime, serrano chili, and creamy avocado—all served with crisp chips.

Vegetable lovers are equally spoiled by creative sides like the Brussels Sprouts tossed in housemade mole and Mexican Corn Esquites, a smoky, spicy street food classic. The fajitas—from the hearty ribeye steak to the salsa macha-marinated shrimp—deliver robust flavors and vibrant presentations that celebrate the richness of Mexican culinary heritage with a contemporary flair.

Guests consistently praise Tamayo for its thoughtful balance of bold and nuanced flavors, as well as impeccable service. Zulema Chavez highlights the beauty of the space and the “to die for” creamy guajillo sauce that coats the enchiladas, while Rachel Chin commends the restaurant’s ability to deliver a fresh, upscale dining experience every time. Longtime fans like C G appreciate the perfectly balanced Tamayo Margarita and inventive guacamole with pork belly, evidencing the kitchen’s flair for nuanced taste contrasts.

Every visit to Tamayo is an immersion into vibrant, elegant Mexican cuisine reimagined in a refined American setting. From the first sip of a handcrafted cocktail—like a smooth pisco sour or robust bourbon old fashioned—to the last bite of Chile Relleno or the comforting La Tampiqueña, the experience is one that tastes as good as it feels: authentic, satisfying, and utterly delightful. Whether you’re a devoted local or a curious traveler, Tamayo promises a dining experience that lingers in your memory long after the last forkful.

Tamayo is a cute spot for dinner or a date night. The restaurant is beautiful inside. The food was amazing. I loved the shrimp & crab enchiladas. The tortillas were homemade and the creamy guajillo sauce was to die for!

With an upscale, lighter take on Mexican fare, this restaurant offers delicious food packed with an array of wonderful flavors. I've never been disappointed in Tamayo. Staff is friendly and fast, and the chef produces a wide variety of tasty treats.

I really enjoyed Tamayo, enough so I went there twice in a week. Started with the Tamayo margarita that has a great balance sweet sour as I'm one to shy away from sweet drinks. The guacamole with pork belly had a nice balance of tartness to take care of the richness. Quesabirria were excellent elevated version. Good michelada as well

Tamayo is gorgeous inside, with fantastic service and great food. We had the fish tacos and chicken fajitas - both great. The cocktails (we had pisco sours and bourbon old fashioned) were also delicious. Would absolutely recommend.

If you’re looking for an elevated, vibrant Mexican dining experience right in the heart of Larimer Square, Tamayo by Chef Richard Sandoval is a standout. From the moment you step inside, the atmosphere strikes a perfect balance of modern elegance and welcoming warmth. The décor is polished and stylish, and there’s a rooftop deck that gives the space a fresh, open feel. Chef Sandoval clearly brings his passion and heritage into every dish, blending bold, authentic Mexican flavors with creative presentation and modern techniques. The menu offers a range of dishes that manage to feel both adventurous and comforting — standouts like expertly seasoned tacos, guacamole and queso fundido, and more substantial entrees like their salmon a la Talla or enchiladas all leave an impression. Service is polished without being stuffy — attentive, friendly, and clearly proud of what the team is offering. The overall flow from ordering to plating is smooth, which enhances the experience rather than detracting from it. It’s also impressive how Tamayo has kept itself relevant over the years. Originally opening in 2001, it’s still regarded as a corner-stone of Denver’s restaurant scene, continually refreshing both its space and its menu to stay dynamic without losing what made it special in the first place.

Best Mexican brunch. Service was quick and great. We ended up doing bottomless food and mimosa for only $55. Alexis was amazing, she was so attentive and was on top of the table.

A must-try spot. Very welcoming, and the staff was awesome. The food was so good; the tacos were some of the best I've had in a while. We shared four orders of tacos. The pork belly guacamole was good but probably not much different from just getting the guacamole. We got the Brussels sprouts and the churros. All good; we will be coming back!

We went in on a busy night with no reservation but were immediately seated at the bar and Lupita (I’m sorry if I misspelled that) was amazing! We tried the blackberry and peach margs, “Mexican hummus”, al pastor tacos and the grilled chicken. I would recommend this spot to anyone, the staff, food and vibes were 10/10 and we will be back!
